Emperor Minilik, who ruled Ethiopia from 1889 – 1913, was born on this day in Ankober, Shewa.




20 AUGUST 1987:
Yidnekachew Tessema died on this day at the age of 65. He was the founder of the Ethiopian Football Federation in 1944. Between 1960 and 1976 he served as Director and Commissioner of the federation, Vice-Minster of the Ethiopian Sports Ministry and Secretary-General of the Ethiopian Football Federation. He was once the coach of the national Ethiopian team as well as manager and coach of St. George Football Club. He was also the team leader of the Ethiopian national team at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.



21 AUGUST 2012:
After weeks of speculation about his health and unsubstantiated reports of his death, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is declared dead on the state-controlled television. The announcement follows the government's repeated denial that the PM was dead or gravely ill. The government's announcement said Meles Zenawi died on 20 August 2012 "after contracting an infection" and was temporarily replaced by Haile Mariam Desalegne as Acting Prime Minister.




27 AUGUST 1975:
Emperor Haileselassie – the last Emperor of Ethiopia’s Solomonic Dynasty – was killed on this day, aged 85, by the Marxist regime who had taken power one year before.
